Barbourville sits at the doorstep of some of Kentucky's most beautiful hiking — from short nature walks at Dr. Thomas Walker State Historic Site to the 85-mile trail network at Cumberland Gap National Historical Park.
Dr. Thomas Walker State Historic Site
Just outside Barbourville, this site features short, gentle trails through Appalachian hardwood forest. The trails are perfect for families, quick walks, and picnics. The highlight is a replica of the first cabin built in Kentucky, where Dr. Thomas Walker and his party camped in 1750 — 19 years before Daniel Boone.
The trails here are easy and well-marked, making this an ideal spot for beginners or anyone looking for a peaceful walk in the woods without a major commitment.
Cumberland Gap National Historical Park
About 35 minutes south of Barbourville, Cumberland Gap offers over 85 miles of trails ranging from short nature walks to multi-day backpacking routes.
The Pinnacle Overlook — The park's signature hike. A short but steep trail leads to panoramic views stretching across Kentucky, Virginia, and Tennessee. On a clear day, you can see for miles. The Pinnacle Road is also driveable for those who want the view without the hike.
Hensley Settlement — A guided hike to a restored early-1900s mountain community. It's a journey through both wilderness and history, with log cabins, spring houses, and artifacts from the families who lived on this mountain ridge.
Wilderness Road Trail — Trace the actual route Daniel Boone and thousands of pioneers walked through the Cumberland Gap into Kentucky. This trail connects to the park's longer backpacking routes for those wanting a multi-day adventure.
What to Bring
Always carry water, wear sturdy shoes, and check the weather before heading out. Appalachian weather can change quickly, especially at elevation. Fall is arguably the best hiking season — cooler temperatures, fewer insects, and spectacular foliage as the hardwood forests turn gold, orange, and red.
All area trails are free to access. Pick up a trail map at the Cumberland Gap visitor center for the most up-to-date route information.
