Daniel Boone Festival Guide

Since 1948, Barbourville has hosted the Daniel Boone Festival — and it holds the distinction of being Kentucky's oldest continuous festival. Every October, downtown Barbourville transforms into a celebration of pioneer life and Appalachian heritage. The streets fill with craft demonstrations, artisan markets, parades, pageants, and living history reenactments that recreate the world of early Knox County settlers.

The festival honors the frontier legacy of Daniel Boone, who blazed the Wilderness Road through the nearby Cumberland Gap in 1775, opening Kentucky to settlement. Parking is free on downtown streets but fills up quickly during peak events — arrive early, especially for the parade. The festival is walkable once you park, with most activities within a few blocks of the square.

October weather in the Appalachian foothills is typically pleasant — cool, crisp fall days with peak autumn foliage — but bring layers and comfortable walking shoes. Many vendors are cash-only, so come prepared. If you're visiting from out of town, Barbourville is about 2 hours south of Lexington and 1.5 hours north of Knoxville, just off US-25E.
