The Wilderness Road
Long before Barbourville existed, the land that would become Knox County lay in the path of history. In 1775, Daniel Boone and a party of axmen blazed the Wilderness Road through the Cumberland Gap — the narrow passage through the Appalachian Mountains that became the primary route for hundreds of thousands of settlers heading west into Kentucky and beyond.
Boone's trail passed through the rugged Appalachian terrain of southeastern Kentucky, and the Barbourville area sits squarely in the heart of this frontier landscape. The Cumberland Gap, just south of Knox County, was the key to the West — and Boone's road through it has been called the nation's first great highway to the frontier.
Boone's Legacy in Knox County
Daniel Boone never founded Barbourville itself — the city was established in the early 1800s after Knox County was formed in 1799 — but his spirit is woven into the community's identity. The annual Daniel Boone Festival, held every October since 1948, is Kentucky's oldest continuous festival and celebrates the pioneer heritage that Boone represents.
Throughout Knox County you'll find places connected to the frontier era: the Dr. Thomas Walker State Historic Site commemorates the explorer who preceded Boone by 15 years, and the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park preserves the actual passage Boone used. Together, these sites form a living trail of early American exploration.
