Gateway to Kentucky
Barbourville sits in one of the most historically significant corners of Kentucky. Long before the city was founded, this land was the gateway through which explorers and settlers entered the Bluegrass State. Dr. Thomas Walker became the first recorded European explorer to lead an expedition through the Cumberland Gap in 1750 — 25 years before Daniel Boone followed the same route to blaze the Wilderness Road.
Knox County was established in 1799, and Barbourville was founded shortly after as the county seat. The town grew around the courthouse square, and many of its oldest structures reflect the architectural styles of 19th-century Appalachian Kentucky. Today, these historic sites tell the story of a community shaped by the frontier, the Civil War, and the coal and timber booms that followed.
Preserving the Past
Several sites in and around Barbourville preserve this rich heritage. The Dr. Thomas Walker State Historic Site features a replica of the first cabin built in Kentucky. The Knox County Courthouse, an anchor of downtown, has served as the center of county government for generations. And just a short drive south, the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park preserves the actual mountain passage that opened the West.
Union College, founded in 1879, adds another layer of history. Its campus includes several historic buildings that have educated generations of Appalachian students. Together, these sites make Barbourville a rewarding destination for anyone interested in the story of America's frontier and the culture of southeastern Kentucky.
