State Parks

Barbourville sits at the doorstep of some of Kentucky's most significant parks — from the first cabin in Kentucky at Dr. Thomas Walker to the legendary Cumberland Gap where Daniel Boone blazed the Wilderness Road.

Dr. Thomas Walker State Historic Site

Just outside Barbourville, this state historic site marks where Dr. Thomas Walker and his party camped in 1750 — believed to be the first Euro-Americans to explore the region, 19 years before Daniel Boone. The site features a replica of the first cabin built in Kentucky, picnic areas, and short hiking trails through Appalachian forest.

It's a quiet, reflective spot — perfect for a family picnic, a short walk, or to connect with the earliest chapters of Kentucky history. The replica cabin gives a tangible sense of how those first explorers lived, and the surrounding forest looks much as it did in Walker's day.

Cumberland Gap National Historical Park

About 35 minutes south of Barbourville, Cumberland Gap National Historical Park spans the Kentucky-Virginia-Tennessee border at the legendary pass where Daniel Boone and thousands of pioneers crossed into Kentucky on the Wilderness Road. The park offers over 85 miles of trails, the stunning Pinnacle Overlook (with tri-state views on a clear day), and the historic Hensley Settlement.

Drive through the Cumberland Gap Tunnel — an engineering marvel — and hike to the Pinnacle for panoramic views that stretch across three states. The visitor center offers exhibits on the Gap's role in American westward expansion. This is a full-day destination and one of the most significant historical sites in the eastern United States.

Levi Jackson Wilderness Road State Park

About 30 minutes north in London, KY, Levi Jackson Wilderness Road State Park combines history and recreation. The park features the McHargue's Mill — a working gristmill — and trails that follow the original Wilderness Road route. It's a great complement to Cumberland Gap for anyone tracing the pioneer story.
