Founded in 1879, Union College has been a cornerstone of Barbourville for nearly 150 years — shaping the community's culture, economy, and identity as one of Kentucky's oldest liberal arts colleges.
A Frontier College
Union College was established by the Methodist Church in the years following the Civil War, when southeastern Kentucky was still a rugged frontier. The college was founded to bring higher education to the Appalachian region, and it has stayed true to that mission ever since.
The historic Old Classroom Building, constructed in the 1880s, still stands on campus today — a brick-and-stone reminder of the college's enduring presence in Barbourville. The campus is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Academic Programs
Today, Union College offers undergraduate and graduate programs across the liberal arts, sciences, business, and education. The college is particularly known for its programs in nursing, social work, and business, with strong ties to the regional workforce.
With an enrollment of around 1,200 students, Union maintains small class sizes and a personal approach to education. Students come from across Appalachia and beyond, drawn by the college's commitment to accessible, affordable higher education.
Campus Life
The Union College Bulldogs compete in the NAIA's Appalachian Athletic Conference, with teams in football, basketball, baseball, softball, and more. Homecoming weekend each fall brings alumni back to Barbourville for parades, tailgating, and the big game at Burch/Nau Field.
Memorial Gymnasium, the college's historic basketball arena, is a beloved community gathering space. The campus also hosts cultural events, art exhibitions, and lecture series open to the public throughout the academic year.
Community Impact
Union College is one of Barbourville's largest employers and a cultural anchor for the community. The college brings students, faculty, and visitors to town, supporting local businesses and adding energy to the community.
For a town of 3,400 people, having a four-year college is remarkable. Union College gives Barbourville an intellectual and cultural dimension that most small Appalachian towns don't have — and the town is better for it.
